GovChat
GovChat is a citizen engagement platform that empowers South Africans to connect directly with government services through mobile and online channels.
Founded by Eldrid Jordaan, the son of renowned political activist and trade unionist Paul M Jordaan, GovChat was officially approved by the South African government in January 2018 to operate as a citizen-government engagement platform.
However, shortly after receiving government approval, challenges began to mount. The platform struggled financially and quickly fell into debt. In a courageous effort to keep GovChat afloat, Eldrid poured all of his personal savings into the project. With his resources depleted, he was forced to move back into his mother’s home with his wife and two children. The situation became so dire that he couldn’t afford his children’s school fees, which led to their suspension from school. It was a deeply challenging period that pushed him to the brink of giving up.
Just when hope seems lost, Eldrid receives an unexpected call from an anonymous investor who had been following his work on social media. Inspired by his determination and the potential of the platform, the investor offered US$1 million to help revive and scale GovChat.
That pivotal moment changed everything.
Today, GovChat is a success story, with over 9 million active users. The platform has played a vital role in public service delivery, having processed more than 12.5 million SASSA grant applications, making a tangible difference in the lives of millions of South Africans.
