SASSA Disability Grant

The government of South Africa has dedicated a day (3 December) for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. According to the 2022 report, 3.3 million people are living with disability in the country. This is a huge number, and we need to do something for these people so they can live an easy life. That is why the SASSA Disability grant comes as a comfort and peace for these people.

If you are a citizen who is living with mental or physical disability, you can apply for a Disability Grant (DG) today and get a monthly stipend of R2,315.

What is the SASSA Disability Grant?

The SASSA Disability Grant is a type of financial help given by the South African government to people who are unable to work because of a disability. This grant is managed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and is meant to support individuals who cannot earn a living due to physical or mental disabilities.

The Disability Grant was first introduced in 1937, making it the first social security grant in South Africa. In the beginning, the grant was only given to white people who qualified through a means test (a test to check if someone is poor enough to need help). Over time, the rules have changed, and today the grant is available to all South African citizens, without any discrimination based on race or background.

This grant is specially designed for people who are:

  • Permanently disabled: meaning the disability is long-term and will not improve.
  • Temporarily disabled: meaning the disability may improve with time or treatment.

To qualify, the disability must be serious enough that the person cannot work and earn an income. The disability can be physical (such as difficulty walking, seeing, or using hands) or mental (such as severe depression, mental illness, or other conditions that affect the mind).

People who are approved for the grant receive financial support for up to 6 months if their disability is temporary. If their condition is permanent, they may receive the grant for a longer period, but they must still go through medical assessments to confirm their condition.
