Eligibility Criteria for Older Persons Grant 2025

Before you apply for this grant at the SASSA office, you need to check your eligibility first. This guide will let you know if you are eligible for the payment or not.

Basic Requirements

  • Age:
    • Men must be 65 years or older
    • Women must be 60 years or older
  • Citizenship:
    • You must be one of the following:
    • A South African citizen
    • A permanent resident
    • A refugee, asylum seeker, or special permit holder living in South Africa

Who Cannot Apply?

You are not eligible for the Older Persons Grant if:

  • You already receive a Disability Grant, Care Dependency Grant, or Child Support Grant
  • You get a monthly pension or stipend from any institution
  • You are currently employed or own a business that earns money
  • You live in a government-funded old-age home or similar institution

Financial Requirements

Assets Limit

  • Single applicants: You must not own assets worth more than R1,227,600.
  • Married applicants: The combined asset value must not exceed R2,455,200.

Income Limit

  • Single: You must not earn more than R7,190 per month.
  • Married: Your combined monthly income must be less than R14,380.

Grant Payment Amount

  • R2,185 per month for people aged 60 to 75
  • R2,315 per month for people over 75 years old

Required Documentation for Older Persons Grant

Prepare the following documents:

1. South African ID

  • A green barcoded ID book, a smart ID card, or a valid temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
  • If you do not have an ID, you must fill out an affidavit (SASSA will provide the form) and get a sworn statement from a respected person (like a traditional leader or religious leader).

2. Proof of Residential Address

  • A recent document (not older than 3 months) showing where you live.
  • It can be a utility bill, a letter from a ward councillor, or a statement from your landlord.

3. Proof of Income

  • If you receive money from a job, pension, or business, provide bank statements or payslips from the last 3 months.
  • If you are unemployed, submit an affidavit declaring that you do not have a regular income.

4. Proof of Marriage (if married)

  • A marriage certificate or a sworn affidavit if the certificate is not available.
  • If divorced, include the divorce order.
  • If widowed, provide the death certificate of your spouse.

5. Proof of Asset Ownership

  • Documents that show ownership of land, vehicles, property, or business.
  • Include valuation documents if possible.

6. Medical Report (if disabled or ill)

  • A medical or assessment report not older than 3 months.
  • Must be signed by a registered doctor.

7. Means Test Results

  • SASSA will do a financial check to ensure you qualify based on income and assets.
  • You must pass this test to receive the grant.

8. Proof that You Are Not Receiving Any Other SASSA Grant

  • SASSA will check this through their system.
  • If you were getting another grant (like a disability grant) that has ended, show proof of cancellation or expiry.

9. Affidavit or Sworn Statement

  • If you are missing any formal documents, write an affidavit explaining why.
  • Must be signed and stamped by a Commissioner of Oaths.

SASSA Older Persons Grant Application Process

Once you have prepared all the stuff, you can proceed to the nearest SASSA office and submit your application with the help of the following application guide.

  2. Gather all the required documents with their attested copies and visit the office.
  3. On arrival, look for the SASSA officer who is assisting in the application process. Ask for the application form and get help from the officer to fill up the form.
  4. Attach all the attested copies and proofread the form before submission.
  5. Submit the form once all is correct, and that’s it.

How to Collect Old Age Pension Payment?

When applying for the Older Persons Grant, you will choose a payment method. If you selected “retail store payment”, your money will be sent to specific retail partners like:

  • Spar (in some areas)

These stores work with SASSA to help you get your grant money safely and conveniently.

Before You Go to the Store

Make sure you have the following:

  • Your SASSA Gold Card (or the card you used to register your payment).
  • Your valid South African ID book or smart card.
  • Your phone, in case you receive a payment SMS.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

✅ Step 1: Go to the Customer Service Desk or Till Point

  • When you enter the store, ask the security or a staff member to show you where SASSA payments are made.
  • It is usually at the customer service desk, designated tills, or the Money Market counter.

✅ Step 2: Provide Your SASSA Card

  • Hand over your SASSA Gold Card to the cashier or insert it into the card machine.
  • You may also be asked to enter your PIN.

✅ Step 3: Confirm Your Identity

  • Some stores may ask you to show your ID book or smart ID card.
  • This is to make sure the card belongs to you.

✅ Step 4: Withdraw the Amount

  • You can withdraw the full amount or just a portion of your grant.
  • You can also choose to buy groceries and get the rest of the money in cash.
