The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is catering to 9 million citizens with a R370 payment each month. This is a huge number, and more than 8000 new people apply for the SRD grant every month.
So, to keep the tax and budget spending fair, SASSA has to implement grant qualification criteria. This is not an open grant for all people, so anyone who is even rich can apply and get the payment from the state.
Only unemployed, poor, and disabled people are eligible for SASSA grants. Here are the qualifying rules that everyone has to follow.
Citizenship/Residency: Must have a valid South African citizenship or permanent residency. Asylum seekers, special permit holders, and refugees are allowed.
Eligible Age Limit: Must be younger than 18 years and not older than 59 years.
Job/Business Status: Must be unemployed. If working, then the monthly income should be below the R624 threshold.
NSFAS/UIF Payment Status: Should not be receiving financial aid from NSFAS or UIF.
Living Country: Must be living in South Africa when applying or receiving the grant payments.
Not Residing in a Government Institution: The applicant must not be living in a government-funded institution, such as:
- A prison or correctional facility
- A state-funded care home
- A psychiatric institution
- Any other government residential facility
Documents and Details Requirement for SRD Grant Application
Once you have confirmed that your financial status matches the grant qualification, the next step is to get your things ready.
- South African Green ID Document or Smart ID Card and ID Number
- SIM Number or Mobile Phone Number (Not Landline)
- Bank Account in Applicant’s Name (Can’t Use Someone Else’s Account)
- Bank Statement of Recent 3 Months (Soft Copy + Attested by Bank)
- Your Correct Information in the Database of Department of Home Affairs (DHA)
SASSA SRD R370 Grant Application Online Submission
Now once you have all the things and documents ready, it’s time to apply for an SRD grant online. One thing you should know is that there is only one way to apply for an SRD grant, and it is on the SRD Portal.
Now, keep this page open and open a new tab on the same browser. Follow these steps for the grant application.
Step 1: Go to Srd.sassa.gov.za Official Application Portal:
Make sure you are on the official SASSA SRD grant portal to apply for the R370 grant application. The official website link is srd.sassa.gov.za. You can click on the link to visit the website directly without any issues.
Step 2: Tab “click here to apply online” Button:
On the SRD website, you will see a button with the label “click here to apply online,” so click on it. It will move you forward to the application page.
Step 3: Enter Your Mobile Phone Number:
On the next page, you will see that SASSA is asking for your mobile phone number to send a PIN via SMS. You need to enter your phone number and click on the “send sms” button. This will generate a one-time PIN that will be sent to your phone number.
Enter this PIN in the PIN section and click on the “verify pin” button.
Step 4: Accept Declaration and Consent of SRD Grant:
Right after entering the PIN, you need to accept the declaration and consent to the SRD grant. You should carefully read all the terms and conditions and then choose “Agree” from the drop-down menu and click on the “submit” button.
Step 5: Start Filling Out the Application Form:
Now your application form will appear on the screen, and you need to start entering your details. The first thing you need to enter is your ID number, full name, and surname. Once you have added these details, click on the “verify identity” button.
Now you need to enter the other details:
- Email address
- Gender (male/female)
- Highest education level (choose from menu)
- When you were last employed (choose from menu)
- Disability (yes/no)
- Citizenship (citizen/asylum seeker/special permit holder/refugee)
- Home address
- City
- Province
- District
- Municipality
- Ward number
- Cell Phone number where SMS from SASSA will be sent
Now click on the “submit” button to submit all of the above details.
Step 6: Add Banking Details or Choose Payment Option:
At this stage, you will get your application ID (AppID) of 6 digits. You need to keep this ID safe and note down the ID for further processing.
Also, you will be asked to choose a payment option, like Bank or Cash Send. You will also see the option “Current Payment Option” where you can choose the option to get the R370 payment.
To get your payment via bank transfer, here is what you need to do:
- Click on the “Capture Own Bank Account” option.
- Choose your bank’s name from the drop-down list, i.e,
- ABSA
- FNB
- NEDBANK
- STANDARD BANK
- CAPITEC BANK
- Choose “bank branch” from the menu.
- Select the “account type”:
- Cheque
- Savings
- Transmission
- Enter your account number.
- Now click on the “submit” button.
- You will get a message “bank details updated successfully.”

How to Check SASSA SRD Grant Application Status?
So you just have submitted your SRD grant application and need to know whether it’s approved or not? You can check your grant application status online on our website. Here is how:
- Click on “SASSA Status Check” and visit our SASSA status page.
- Now, you will see a yellow-colored tool. Here, you need to enter your:
- Your South African ID number in the first box.
- Your phone number is in the second box.
- Click on the green-colored “Check Status” button.
- A pop-up screen will appear with your grant application status. If your status will be approved, then it will say, “Application approved, and your payday is 27 May 2025”.
- If your status is pending, then it is still in progress.
- Now, if your application status shows declined or failed, then you need to apply for the appeal for reconsideration.
Lodge an Appeal for SASSA SRD Grant Reconsideration
If your grant application is declined or rejected despite you are qualifying for the grant then you can apply for the SASSA SRD reconsideration appeal.
